[AGGRESSIVELY DOESN’T WANT TO KNOW THE DOCTOR’S NAME]

It’s not even that I don’t want to know it

It’s that I don’t think Steven Moffat has the right to name him

oh my god yes

that’s it

that statement is why I’m so angry

Why can’t he just be named The Doctor? That’s as much a name as anything else.

(also I like to think his name is Rumpelstiltskin.)

^ THIS

First of all, “the Doctor” is what he wants to be called, ergo it is his name

Second of all, out of every writer who has ever worked on the show, why should Moffat be the one who gets to make this decision (on the other hand, Moffat has made every effort possible to prove that the show is His Now, so I really wouldn’t put it past him)

Third of all, what does that say if Moffat decides that a “legal” “birth” name which is recorded only in the archives of a planet that no longer exists, a “name” which hasn’t been used in centuries, is more “real” than the name an individual actually is and wants to be called by

what does that say to trans* folks

what does that say to people who’ve changes their names for other reasons

what does that say to anyone who, for whatever reason, has changed their name, or prefers to go by a name other than what is on their government papers, or uses different names in different contexts

I just… wow Moffat you’re a terrible person

Do you still love Moffat now? Honestly.

I… don’t think it’s like that, though?

(Just gonna say straight off the bat that a) I don’t like Moffat either, and b) I don’t want to know the Doctor’s name either, and c) my knowledge of Classic Who is limited so apologies if I’ve somehow got the completely wrong end of the stick.)

As far as I understand, Time Lords don’t use their birth names because their names give people power over them of some kind. Even from an early age (in the Time Academy, which children enter when they’re 7), budding Time Lords are assigned different names to their birth names for their safety. For example, the Doctor was Theta in his youth. Then, when they graduate the academy, they are allowed to chose a name/title that they feel represents them/their aims for life. Which begs the question how did no one suspect the Master was a little touched in the head before he started killing people hmmm. So yeah, not only does the Doctor not have a problem with his birth name (he may actually quite like it, idk, I’ve never had a chance to ask him), just with people knowing it, he also hasn’t seemed to have a problem with people assigning him names that are not his birth name, and not names he chose either in the past - and which, I think, he’s been called by the Master/the Rani/some other Time Lords/Ladies during Classic Who, whilst he was operating under his title of the Doctor. Which makes the whole “you’re disrespecting his choice by trying to unearth his birth name and call it his real name” a tad pointless.

tl;dr, the Doctor has had a bunch of names other than Doctor, and keeping their birth names secret is more to do with protecting themselves than not wanting to be called by it

Yes, Moffat is a douchebag/idiot who doesn’t realise he’s a douchebag. Yes, this series hasn’t been the greatest ever. Yes, pretty much everyone is in agreement it’s time for him to leave the show.

But no, everything he does on the show is not part of some fiendish plot he has to single-handedly put rights for women/LGB people/trans* people/people of colour back by 20 years. Please can we stop turning everything he does into some dramatic attack on minority rights that he’s thought up whilst cackling madly and clubbing baby seals to death.

^^ THIS.

Some people see reasons behind things that just aren’t there.

My thoughts on Elementary…

The debate about Elementary arose because CBS cast Lucy Liu as John (though it’s Joan now) Watson. So, some people are pissed. But when someone says that they’re pissed about her being cast as Watson, everyone kinda assumes it’s due to the fact that she’s a woman being cast in a main role (which I actually have no bad feelings on). I have no issue with this itself on face value, it still bothers me once we go deeper.

The friendship between Watson and Holmes is an extremely strong one, an unwavering sense of brotherhood. What worries me, by Watson becoming a woman (while Holmes stays male) is that the show will not accurately show the bond that Watson and Holmes have. Whether they are both the same gender or not, I wonder if the network/producers will be able to steer clear of sexual tension etc. I say this because television shows as a whole (on both sides of the Atlantic) have a track record of not considering that men and women can just be good friends with a sibling-like strength. I can count on one hand and still have fingers to spare the amount of shows that don’t do this.

  • Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did not write their relationship with any kind of homosexuality in mind, of course at the time the thought would be unthinkable, but Sherlock was almost certainly asexual. I doubt they’re going to make asexuality a part of the show.

I understand and recognise that men and women can have a strong bond like that of Watson and Holmes, but does it work in TV shows? It’s almost always failed, and their relationship comes across as sexually constrained, or perhaps the ‘they’ll inevitably get together’ploy, or it just becomes an ordinary friendship, which would downplay how close Watson and Holmes actually are.

The relationship between the two is perfectly described in the Guy Ritchie films - “Two brothers. Not in blood, but in bond”. To my knowledge, television shows have not managed to do this justice between a man and a woman, and it would be a shame if it fell down because of this in Elementary.

_

So I get a bit defensive when some people say “you’re just upset because she’s a woman”.  I’m actually not upset, more worried that the friendship won’t be written or shown in a way that will show the friendship as it was intended.

I think reserve the right to be a little cautious about this casting, and I resent being called sexist when all I’m doing is worrying about how accurately a TV show will portray their friendship. If they can do it, then all the luck to them.

I’ll see how it pans out and watch the show.

EDIT: I’ve been linked to this - Which allays my concerns somewhat, but I hope it really does come across as a friendship with none of the weird sexual tension that you end up getting in other shows.
